Alifu Dhaalu (South Ari) Atoll

Dhidhdhoo is an inhabited island in Alifu Dhaalu (South Ari) Atoll with 4 registered guest houses. Local-island stays are a different Maldives from the resorts — a village, a harbour, a bikini beach set aside for visitors — and they photograph differently too: colour, life and texture rather than an empty horizon.

Sessions on Dhidhdhoo run at sunrise or in the hour before sunset, on the bikini beach, the harbour wall, or a sandbank by dhoni. I travel by public ferry or speedboat from Malé; the travel fee is quoted on its own line, and for most local islands it is the lowest on the list.
